Quote to Ponder

In the course of history, there comes a time
when humanity is called to shift to a new level
of consciousness, to reach a higher moral ground.
A time when we have to shed our fear and give
hope to each other. That time is now.

-- Wangari Maatha, Kenyan biologist,
veterinarian anatomist, environmental and
political activist, Nobel Peace Prize
recipient (b. 1940)

I don't have any words to add to this. I think this says it all and more.

But look at the date. How long have we been staring at this need without taking action? Have we become like deer facing the hunter's headlights?

Just thinking out loud.

  1. The cusp of WWII... In terms of geological time we're not even a blip, yet look how much we can destroy. Thanks for posting such beautiful, thoughtful things. Keep your spirit lovely. Let's all try that.

  2. Sorry, had to come back to this. I see that she was born in 1940. Shortly after the beginning of WWII in Europe. I had to look her up. She is 70. When you look at the life of someone like this it is awe inspiring. I just skimmed her life story really. But to see someone with such strength and force of personality. What she has seen and lived through, the wars since her birth, strife, political and personal struggles... I can't imagine. I read a lot of news, not just by choice, it's part of one of my jobs, and the stories every day of war, struggle, hatred, fear, greed go on and on. I don't watch tv, that is too much. But I don't think most people, especially people in the US, can begin to imagine some of the horrible things going on in other parts of the world. For example; in Sudan, which is next to Kenya, I I struggle to understand, to begin to comprehend what has been happening in Darfur for so long. I can click on a link on a web site to say I suppport action to change it but I remain sitting here in a state of remove. We see these things, say "how horible" then move on to the next task. Rambling now for sure, and I don't know a lot about all this, but I do know she's right. It is time for us to wake up.

  3. That it is, time for a major world-wide wake-up call. Yet when that clarion call is made - will it be like a re-run of Horton Hear's a WHO? Or will the people of the world actually be able to hear, interpret and respond? We are 60 years out from this last effort...........and the WHO's are still in dire need.
